Experiencing muscle pain affects everyone at some point. Stress, tension, an injury, or an underlying health condition, like an infection, can bring it on.

While muscle pain may disrupt your day-to-day life, several OTC muscle relaxers can help alleviate symptoms and provide relief. Muscle relaxers work by targeting the central nervous system to reduce muscle spasms and promote relaxation.

However, it is important to speak with a healthcare professional if your symptoms persist or worsen. They can identify whether your muscle pain is due to an underlying health condition or lifestyle factor and recommend the right treatment options to help relieve your symptoms.

Types of OTC muscle relaxers include:

Guaifenesin

Guaifenesin (Mucinex) belongs to a drug class called expectorants, which commonly treat respiratory conditions. However, they can also be used as muscle relaxers, easing symptoms like shoulder, neck, and upper back muscle spasms.

Guaifenesin is generally well-tolerated, with mild common side effects. These can include:

  • headaches
  • stomach upset
  • dizziness

However, according to a 2009 case report, some people may also experience an allergic reaction to the medication, which may show as:

If you are experiencing an allergic reaction after taking guaifenesin, you should discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Acetaminophen

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is not specifically classified as a muscle relaxer but can help relieve pain associated with muscle tension or spasms.

Common side effects are rare, but some people may experience:

  • abdominal pain
  • allergic reactions such as rash or difficulty breathing

Acetaminophen is generally safe when used as directed, but exceeding the recommended dosage or taking it for prolonged periods can cause liver toxicity.

If you have liver disease or have ever lived with alcohol use disorder, it is important to use acetaminophen cautiously. In this instance, it can also be helpful to speak with a healthcare professional before taking acetaminophen.

NSAIDs

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are available OTC and can help reduce inflammation and pain. This is why they can also act as muscle relaxers and alleviate muscle tension and spasms.

Common examples include ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve).

Commonly reported side effects of NSAIDs include:

  • stomach upset
  • heartburn
  • allergic reactions

Prolonged or high dose use of NSAIDs can lead to kidney damage. People with a history of gastrointestinal ulcers, heart disease, kidney disease, or bleeding disorders should use NSAIDs with caution and consider talking with a healthcare professional before taking these medications.

What lifestyle measures can help?

As well as taking an OTC muscle relaxer, including some lifestyle measures into your routine can you help manage muscle pain. For example:

  • Heat or cold therapy: Applying heat or cold packs to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and ease muscle pain. Try experimenting with both to see which provides more relief for your symptoms.
  • Regular exercises: Physical activity and exercises may improve physical function, improving muscle pain and stiffness severity.
  • Posture: Maintaining good posture, especially during prolonged sitting or repetitive activities, may reduce muscle strain and associated pain.
  • Rest: Giving your muscles enough time to recover and heal is essential for pain relief. Avoid overexertion and make sure you’re getting enough rest.

When to speak with a doctor

While an OTC muscle relaxer may provide temporary relief, speak with a healthcare professional if:

  • your muscle pain doesn’t go away or worsens over time
  • you have underlying medical conditions or are taking other medications that may interact with muscle relaxers
  • you experience severe side effects from the medications, like allergic reactions, which may cause symptoms such as:
    • difficulty breathing
    • swelling of the face or throat
    • hives
    • a rash
  • you’re unsure of the cause of your muscle pain or suspect an underlying issue

A healthcare professional can assess your condition, identify any underlying causes, and recommend treatment options to help you manage your pain.

Summary

OTC muscle relaxers such as guaifenesin and acetaminophen can temporarily relieve muscle pain by promoting muscle relaxation.

However, it is important to understand potential side effects and the need for medical guidance when using these medications.

Lifestyle measures such as rest, heat or cold therapy, regular exercise, and maintaining good posture can also help you manage your pain levels.
