Acne is a very common skin condition that can affect people of all ages, usually causing inflammation, discoloration, and breakouts of painful pimples, most commonly on your face. Acne happens due to your pores being clogged with dead skin cells, sebum (oil), or an overgrowth of bacteria on your face.

Retinol is an OTC product found in the form of creams and serums. It’s a molecule derived from vitamin A and it can have many benefits for your skin, regardless of whether you have acne. It may have particular benefits if you are prone to breakouts, however.

Need a diagnosis or prescription for acne? You can get discreet and expert on-demand care in as little as 15 minutes through Optum Perks. For $29, answer a few questions online and get a treatment plan from a US-licensed healthcare professional. Get started here.

Retinol and acne: What to know

Retinol belongs to a group of vitamin A-based skin care products known as retinoids. Many retinoids are very strong, so they’re only available on prescription. However, retinol is one of the mildest retinoids, so it’s available OTC in creams and serums for your skin.

Retinol is known to have many benefits for the skin. In fact, it’s often used for its support with aging due to its ability to decrease fine lines and wrinkles. It does this by supporting collagen production, which helps with skin hydration and elasticity.

In addition to supporting aging, collagen support can also benefit people with acne. Collagen is essential for skin healing, helping to repair skin damage caused by acne and potentially reducing scarring.

Retinol also works to unclog your pores. It does so by increasing the rate at which your skin cells regenerate, which helps to get rid of the dead skin cells and sebum buildup that contributes to clogged pores and acne.

According to some 2022 research, retinol products may be as effective as stronger retinoids, like tretinoin, with fewer side effects and higher tolerability. The research specifically looked at the aging support of retinoids, but these properties may also benefit acne-prone skin.

OTC retinol creams, gels, and serums typically contain between 0.25% and 1.5% retinol. It’s generally best to start with a lower strength and build up to stronger formulations to avoid further irritating your skin.

Risks of retinol

Retinol is generally safe and effective. It’s milder than other kinds of retinoids, which is why it’s available OTC. However, like any medication, it may come with some side effects, especially at higher concentrations. These may include:

  • irritation
  • skin dryness
  • peeling or flaking
  • itching or burning
  • a feeling of tightness

It’s not recommended for people with eczema to use retinol as it may trigger flares in your symptoms. What’s more, retinol and other retinoids are not recommended during pregnancy as high levels of retinoids may lead to a condition called fetal retinoid syndrome.

Consider speaking with a doctor before using products containing retinol to manage acne.

Other acne treatments

Acne management usually consists of a mixture of OTC, self-care, and prescription treatments.

Alongside retinol, you can use many OTC, acne-friendly creams, moisturizers, and cleansers. Many OTC acne products contain ingredients like azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and salicylic acid. You should also look for mild products that don’t contain perfumes to avoid further irritation.

In more severe cases, doctors might prescribe stronger oral retinoids, such as isotretinoin (Absorica). This is a very strong vitamin A derivative, so it may have more severe side effects. For this reason, doctors tend to monitor you for the duration of treatment.

In some cases, an overgrowth of bacteria can play a role in acne. Doctors may prescribe antibiotics that you apply directly to the skin, such as clindamycin 1% (Cleocin) or erythromycin 2% (Erythrocin). In very severe cases, a doctor might prescribe oral antibiotics, like doxycycline (Vibramycin Hylate) or minocycline (Minocin).

Antibiotics can help reduce inflammation in acne, subsequently reducing symptoms.

Summary

Retinol is an OTC product that’s derived from vitamin A. It belongs to a group of substances called retinoids, which can have many benefits in skin care, particularly for acne-prone skin.

For example, retinol can help boost collagen production. This can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, aid in keeping the skin feeling plump and elastic, and help with wound healing, reducing acne scarring. It can also speed up cell regeneration and exfoliation, which can help remove dead skin cells that are clogging your pores.
