When to avoid fenofibrate

Certain health conditions or other factors could increase some risks with fenofibrate oral tablet. Because of this, doctors may not prescribe fenofibrate in these cases. These health conditions or other factors are called contraindications.

Here’s a list of contraindications for fenofibrate oral tablet:

  • Severe kidney disease, including being on dialysis: If you have severe kidney disease, taking fenofibrate oral tablet may cause dangerously high levels of fenofibrate in the body.
  • Active liver disease: If you have active liver disease, taking fenofibrate oral tablet may cause liver failure.
  • Gallbladder disease: If you have gallbladder disease, taking fenofibrate oral tablet may cause gallstones.
  • Breastfeeding: If you’re breastfeeding your child, taking fenofibrate oral tablet may cause side effects in your child.
  • Past allergic reaction to fenofibrate: If you’ve ever had an allergic reaction to fenofibrate oral tablet, taking it again may cause a life threatening allergic reaction.

Before you start taking fenofibrate, tell your doctor if anything listed above relates to you. They can recommend whether you should take fenofibrate.

Alcohol and fenofibrate

Fenofibrate oral tablet is not known to have any interactions with alcohol.

But too much alcohol use can cause high triglyceride levels in some people. Keep in mind, doctors may prescribe fenofibrate to treat very high triglyceride levels. So drinking alcohol may lower the benefit of taking fenofibrate.
