When to avoid hyoscyamine

Certain health conditions or other factors could increase some risks with hyoscyamine sublingual tablet. Because of this, doctors may not prescribe hyoscyamine in these cases. These health conditions or other factors are called contraindications.

Here’s a list of contraindications for hyoscyamine sublingual tablet:

  • Glaucoma: If you have glaucoma, taking hyoscyamine sublingual tablet may make it worse.
  • Heart problems: If you have a heart problem, taking hyoscyamine sublingual tablet may make it worse.
  • Intestinal blockage: If you have an intestinal blockage, taking hyoscyamine sublingual tablet may make it worse.
  • Myasthenia gravis: If you have myasthenia gravis, taking hyoscyamine sublingual tablet may make it worse.
  • Severe ulcerative colitis: If you have severe ulcerative colitis, taking hyoscyamine sublingual tablet may cause serious complications.
  • Urinary blockage: If you have urinary blockage, including an enlarged prostate gland, taking hyoscyamine sublingual tablet may make it worse.
  • Past allergic reaction to hyoscyamine: If you’ve ever had an allergic reaction to hyoscyamine sublingual tablet, taking it again may cause a life threatening allergic reaction.

Hyoscyamine and lab tests

Hyoscyamine sublingual tablet may interact with a test used to check the ability of the pancreas to respond to a hormone called secretin. It also may interact with a test that checks for adult growth hormone deficiency.

Taking hyoscyamine and having these tests may lead to a false result.

Hyoscyamine and cannabis or CBD

Hyoscyamine sublingual tablet isn’t known to interact with cannabis (commonly called marijuana) or cannabis products such as cannabidiol (CBD). But this doesn’t mean interactions can’t happen or won’t be identified later.

Probably. There are no reports of interactions between hyoscyamine and omeprazole in the prescribing information for hyoscyamine sublingual tablet.

Can you take hyoscyamine and an opioid together?

It’s possible. But opioids, such as oxycodone (Roxybond) and morphine sulfate (MS Contin), can interact with hyoscyamine sublingual tablet.

If you take opioids with hyoscyamine sublingual tablet, it can increase the risk of constipation and urinary or intestinal blockages. Your doctor will likely monitor you more closely if they prescribe both an opioid and hyoscyamine.
