Vtama is a brand-name medication. Brand-name drugs can be expensive because of the studies needed to test how safe and effective they are before they’re approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the United States.

Makers of brand-name drugs can patent and sell their drug for up to 20 years. Until the patent expires, other drugmakers cannot make and sell generic versions of the drug.

Generic medications contain the same active ingredients as brand-name medications. So they don’t require the same costly testing for FDA approval. For this reason, generic drugs usually cost significantly less than brand-name medications like Vtama. But at this time, Vtama is not available in a generic version.
