Can I get Vivotif vaccine in a generic version at a lower cost?

No. There is no generic version of Vivotif vaccine.

Vivotif is a brand-name biologic vaccine. Brand-name drugs can be expensive because of the studies needed to test how safe and effective they are before they’re approved for use.

Makers of a brand-name drug or vaccine can patent and sell their product for up to 20 years. When the patent for a brand-name drug expires, other drugmakers can then make and sell generic versions. The “generic” version of biologic preparations like Vivotif vaccine are called biosimilar medications.

Biosimilar medications contain the same active ingredients as brand-name biologic medications. So they don’t require the same testing, which can be costly. For this reason, biosimilar drugs usually cost significantly less than brand-name vaccines like Vivotif. But currently there are no biosimilar (or “generic”) versions of Vivotif.

Is Vivotif covered by insurance?
