How do Fycompa and lacosamide compare in cost?

There may be a significant cost difference between Fycompa and lacosamide.

Both drugs are prescribed for seizures related to epilepsy, but there are significant differences between the two medications. For example, Fycompa and lacosamide have different active ingredients. An active ingredient is what makes a drug work.

A significant factor in the cost of Fycompa vs. lacosamide is that Fycompa is a brand-name medication, while lacosamide is a generic drug.

Makers of a brand-name drug can patent and sell their drug for up to 20 years. When the patent for a brand-name drug expires, other drugmakers can make and sell generic versions.

Generic drugs contain the same active ingredients as brand-name medications. So they don’t require the same testing, which can be costly. For this reason, generic drugs like lacosamide usually cost significantly less than brand-name medications like Fycompa.

At this time, there are no generic versions of Fycompa. If the cost of Fycompa is an issue, talk with your doctor. It’s possible lacosamide or some other generic medication might be an acceptable, lower cost treatment for your seizures.
