Why does Pediarix cost so much?

Pediarix is a brand-name biologic vaccine. Brand-name biologic drugs can be expensive because of the studies needed to test how safe and effective they are before they can be approved for use in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Makers of a brand-name biologic drug can patent and sell their drug for up to 20 years. When the patent for a brand-name drug expires, other drugmakers can make and sell biosimilar versions.

Biosimilar medications contain the same type of living sources as the brand-name biologic medications they are designed to mimic. So they don’t require the same costly testing for FDA approval. For this reason, biosimilar drugs usually cost significantly less than brand-name biologic medications and vaccines like Pediarix. But at this time, there are no biosimilar versions of Pediarix.
