FAQ
Common questions about Litfulo’s cost
Here are some common questions and answers about Litfulo.
Why does Litfulo cost so much?
Litfulo is a brand-name medication. Brand-name drugs can be expensive because of the studies needed to test how safe and effective they are before they are approved for use.
Makers of a brand-name drug can patent and sell their drug for up to 20 years. When the patent for a brand-name drug expires, other drugmakers can make and sell generic versions.
Generic medications contain the same active ingredients as brand-name medications. So they don’t require the same costly testing prior to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for use in the United States. For this reason, generic drugs usually cost significantly less than brand-name medications like Litfulo.
At this time, Litfulo is not available in a generic version. Read more about generic vs. brand-name drugs.
Is a generic version of ritlecitinib available at a lower cost?
No. Currently, ritlecitinib (RIT le SYE ti nib) is only available in the brand-name medication Litfulo for the treatment of alopecia areata.
Ritlecitinib is the active ingredient in Litfulo. (An active ingredient is what makes a drug work.)
But it’s possible that a generic version of ritlecitinib that costs less than Litfulo might be available sometime in the future. See the FAQ above for details about generic vs. brand-name drugs. Until then, read the “Coupons” section of this article to see how you can lower your cost of Litfulo with Optum Perks coupons.
