FAQs
Common questions about levocetirizine
Below you’ll find answers to a few commonly asked questions about levocetirizine.
How does levocetirizine compare with cetirizine?
Levocetirizine and cetirizine are very similar medications. They’re both antihistamines used to treat allergies and hives. Both come as an oral tablet and an oral liquid solution. Cetirizine also comes as a chewable tablet, orally disintegrating tablet, and oral capsule. (Orally disintegrating tablets dissolve when placed on the tongue.)
Levocetirizine and cetirizine are both considered to be nonsedating antihistamines. (Nonsedating drugs aren’t meant to make you fall asleep.) But they can both cause drowsiness in some people. Levocetirizine is less likely to cause drowsiness than cetirizine.
To learn more about how these medications compare, talk with your doctor. They can recommend whether one is a better medication for you.
Is levocetirizine available over the counter?
Yes, you can buy levocetirizine oral tablet and oral liquid solution over the counter (OTC) for treating seasonal allergies, such as hay fever. The tablet can be used for adults and children ages 6 years and older. The oral liquid solution can be used for adults and children ages 2 years and older.
It’s important to note that OTC levocetirizine should not be used for year-round allergies or hives. And it should not be given to children under 2 years old, unless it’s recommended by a doctor.
If you have questions about OTC forms of levocetirizine, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.
How does levocetirizine work? And how long does it take to start working?
Levocetirizine is an antihistamine that’s used to relieve the symptoms of allergies and hives.
With allergies, you may have itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, and sneezing. With hives, you have patches of red, discolored, swollen, and itchy skin. These symptoms are caused by a substance called histamine that’s released in your body during an allergic reaction. Levocetirizine works by blocking the action of histamine. This helps relieve your symptoms.
Levocetirizine usually starts working about 30 minutes to 1 hour after taking a dose. The oral liquid solution starts working faster than the tablet.
If you’d like to know more about this, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.
