Oral birth control, including Blisovi Fe, is very effective in preventing pregnancy. When taken correctly, the chance of becoming pregnant is less than 1%. It may be 3% if a dose is taken late or missed.

• you’ve taken Blisovi Fe on time each day and miss two periods in a row
• you haven’t taken Blisovi Fe on time each day and miss one period

Is Blisovi Fe a combination birth control pill?

Yes, Blisovi Fe is a combination birth control pill. It contains the active drugs norethindrone acetate and ethinyl estradiol. (An active drug is the ingredient that makes the medication work.)

Norethindrone acetate is a synthetic (lab-made) form of the hormone progesterone. Ethinyl estradiol is a synthetic form of the hormone estrogen. Progesterone and estrogen are made naturally in your body, and they help regulate ovulation (release of an egg). The active drugs in Blisovi Fe work to help prevent ovulation. If you do not ovulate, you won’t get pregnant.

How does Blisovi Fe work? And how long does it take to start working?

Blisovi Fe helps to prevent pregnancy in several ways. It prevents ovulation (release of an egg). (If you do not ovulate, you won’t get pregnant.) Blisovi Fe changes the cervical mucus, which makes it harder for sperm to enter the uterus to fertilize the egg. It also makes the lining of the uterus thinner than usual. This makes it harder for a fertilized egg to implant (attach) in the uterus.

How long it takes Blisovi Fe to start working depends on when you start taking it according to your doctor’s instructions:

• If they recommend you use the Sunday start, you’ll need a backup birth control method for the first 7 days.
• If they recommend you start on day 1 of your period, you don’t need to use a backup birth control method.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves prescription drugs such as Blisovi Fe for certain conditions. Approved uses for Blisovi Fe are described below.

Use for pregnancy prevention

Doctors may prescribe Blisovi Fe oral tablet to help prevent pregnancy. It’s used for this purpose in adults and females* under 18 years old who can become pregnant. It’s usually prescribed long term.

Pregnancy happens when sperm comes in contact with an egg and implants (attaches) in the uterus.

Doctors may not prescribe Blisovi Fe oral tablet in certain situations, such as when someone:

• has had a stroke or heart disease
• has a high risk of getting blood clots
• has liver tumors or liver disease
• has unusual uterine bleeding that hasn’t been diagnosed
• has or has had breast cancer or uterine cancer
• is taking certain medications for hepatitis C

Certain things may affect how a drug works. These include getting vaccines, consuming alcohol or certain foods, or taking the drug with other medications. This effect is called a drug interaction.

• prescription or over-the-counter drugs
• vitamins, herbs, or supplements

Warnings for Blisovi Fe

Some people should not take Blisovi Fe, and others should take it cautiously.

Boxed warning: Increased risk of heart and blood vessel problems from birth control pills in people who smoke

Blisovi Fe has a boxed warning about the increased risk of heart and blood vessel problems from birth control pills in people who smoke cigarettes. Boxed warnings are the most serious warnings from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious heart and blood vessel problems from birth control pills. This includes heart attack, blood clots, or stroke, which may be fatal. The risk is highest if you’re over 35 years old or smoke more than 15 cigarettes per day.

Due to this risk, you should not take Blisovi Fe if you’re over 35 years old and smoke. And if you take Blisovi Fe, you should not smoke.

Symptoms of serious heart and blood vessel problems may include:

• chest pain
• leg pain, coolness, or discoloration
• shortness of breath
• trouble speaking
• drooping on one side of the face
• weakness or numbness on one side of the body

If you experience any of these symptoms, call 911 or seek immediate medical care. If you smoke, tell your doctor. They’ll likely recommend ways to quit and suggest other options for birth control, including nonhormonal forms.

Other warnings

Blisovi Fe could cause harm to people with certain health conditions. This effect is called a drug-condition interaction. Other factors can also affect whether Blisovi Fe is a safe option for you.

Ask your doctor about specific warnings for Blisovi Fe, and be sure to tell your doctor about your:

• current health, including any allergies to medications
• past health conditions or surgeries

Allergic reaction

Blisovi Fe can cause an allergic reaction in some people. Severe allergic reactions are rare but possible.

If you’ve had an allergic reaction to Blisovi Fe or any of its ingredients, your doctor will likely not prescribe Blisovi Fe. They can tell you about medications that are safer options for you.

A mild allergic reaction may cause the following symptoms:

• skin rash
• itchiness
• flushing (temporary warmth, redness, or deepening of skin color)

A severe allergic reaction may cause the following symptoms:

• swelling under your skin, usually in your hands, feet, eyelids, or lips
• swelling of your mouth, throat, or tongue, which can cause breathing problems

If you have an allergic reaction to Blisovi Fe, call your doctor right away. If you have severe symptoms, call 911 or a local emergency number.

Overdose of Blisovi Fe

If you take Blisovi Fe by mouth, you should not take more than your doctor prescribes. For some drugs, doing so may lead to harmful effects or overdose.

If you think you’ve taken too much Blisovi Fe, call your doctor or pharmacist right away. Or you could call 800-222-1222 to speak with someone at America’s Poison Centers. Blisovi Fe and breastfeeding
