FAQ
Common questions about Auryxia’s cost
Here are some common questions and answers about Auryxia.
What is Auryxia used for?
Auryxia is used to treat iron deficiency anemia in adults with chronic kidney disease who are not on dialysis. Auryxia contains iron (ferric citrate). It treats anemia by increasing the level of hemoglobin in your blood and the amount of iron in your body.
Auryxia is also prescribed to treat high blood phosphate in adults with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis.
Does Auryxia 210 mg cost less than the other strengths?
Auryxia is available only as tablets that contain 210 milligrams (mg) of ferric oxide. Be sure to take Auryxia 210 mg tablets exactly as your doctor recommends for best results.
Auryxia is a brand-name medication. Brand-name drugs can be expensive because of the studies needed to test how safe and effective they are before they’re approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Makers of a brand-name drug can patent and sell their drug for up to 20 years. When the patent for a brand-name drug expires, other drugmakers can make and sell generic versions.
Generic medications contain the same active ingredient as brand-name medications. So they don’t require the same costly testing prior to FDA approval. For this reason, generic drugs usually cost significantly less than brand-name medications like Auryxia. But at this time, there are no generic versions of Auryxia 210 mg.
