High Cholesterol

What is high cholesterol?

Cholesterol, or hyperlipidemia, is a substance that is found in the blood and is needed for good health. There is “good” cholesterol (HDL), and “bad” cholesterol (LDL). If your LDL levels are high, it raises your risk of a heart attack, stroke, and other health problems. You can lower your cholesterol by being more active and avoiding red meat, fried foods, butter, and other foods that have high amounts of saturated fat. If your doctor decides medicine is needed, you will most likely be prescribed a statin.
