Key takeaways

  • Peptides are short chains of amino acids that signal cells and organs. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists like semaglutide (Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Zepbound) are peptides approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for weight management.
  • GLP-1 medications work for weight management by slowing stomach emptying and reducing hunger signals in your brain.
  • FDA-approved GLP-1 medications are safe but may cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Unregulated peptides sold online lack safety data and carry risks like contamination, incorrect concentrations, and severe allergic reactions.

Overview

If you’ve been on social media recently, you may have seen a lot of discussion about peptides. It may even seem like these compounds are a one-stop route to overall wellness, but it’s hard to know which claims are actually accurate and which peptides are safe to use.

Some peptides can be used for weight management. These are more commonly known as GLP-1s, and many of them are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for this purpose. It’s important to make sure you’re only using approved peptides for any purpose.

Let’s take a look at peptides for weight loss, including their safety and effectiveness.

What are peptides?

“Peptides” is a collective name for a group of substances naturally found in the body that can have different functions. They are short chains of chemicals called amino acids, and they’re very similar to proteins.

Peptides signal specific cells and organs to trigger specific biological actions. Naturally occurring peptides play important roles in:

  • Neurological effects: Regulating endorphins, which helps reduce pain signals, lower stress, and improve mood.
  • Immune function and repair: Helping your body fix and heal its cells.
  • Hormonal regulation: Managing blood sugar, metabolism, and growth hormone release.

Your body can naturally make peptides from dietary sources, but some are created artificially to be used in medications, dietary supplements, or cosmetics.

GLP-1s vs. peptides

One peptide, known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), is important in your body for regulating blood sugar. GLP-1 receptor agonists (synthetic forms of GLP-1) have been used for decades to treat type 2 diabetes. But experts also noticed that they can help with weight management.

GLP-1s that have been FDA-approved for weight management include semaglutide (Wegovy), liraglutide (Saxenda), tirzepatide (Zepbound), and orforglipron (Foundayo). These are only available on prescription.

Alongside affecting your blood sugar, GLP-1s work in specific ways to affect your appetite:

  • Delaying stomach emptying: GLP-1s slow down the rate at which your stomach empties, promoting a long-lasting feeling of fullness.
  • Reducing hunger: GLP-1s also act on special receptors in your brain to decrease hunger signals and increase feelings of fullness.

These factors can lead to reduced caloric intake, contributing to weight loss. However, it’s important to note that GLP-1s are generally prescribed alongside recommendations for eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly to aid the success of the medication.

According to some 2025 research, people taking GLP-1s can lose up to 25% of their body weight in one year of treatment.

Are peptides for weight loss safe?

FDA-approved peptide medications, like the GLP-1s you can get with a doctor’s prescription, have been studied in several large-scale clinical trials, so research confirms that they are safe. With that said, like most medications, they have potential side effects and risks.

More common side effects of GLP-1s include gastrointestinal issues, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. These are typically most common at the start of treatment as your dose increases. GLP-1s also carry a boxed warning for the risk of thyroid cancer.

However, some peptides are not approved by the FDA. These carry a few potential safety considerations:

  • Lack of human safety data: Unregulated peptides generally lack human safety data, meaning their potential short- and long-term side effects and risks remain largely unknown.
  • Immune system risks: Injecting unverified peptide chains can trigger unpredictable immune responses, potentially leading to severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis.
  • Contamination risks: Products sold through gray-market suppliers or foreign online vendors carry an increased risk of chemical impurities, incorrect concentrations, or microbial contamination.
Note: Some GLP-1 peptides that are approved by the FDA are also marketed in unapproved forms known as compounded GLP-1s. Note that these are not regulated, and the FDA can’t guarantee their safety or effectiveness.

Medical perspective

“Be mindful of purchasing peptides online or from wellness clinics. If there is a claim made that a peptide has really great benefits with minimal side effects, and it just sounds too good to be true, then it may be just that.

Trust your gut and reach out to your doctor or pharmacist before trying unregulated peptides. They may be able to offer solutions that are safer and still effective to reach your health goals.”

Next steps

If you’re seeing a lot of claims about peptides online, you may be wondering what to trust. If you see claims on social media you’re unsure about, think about the following:

  • Consider the source of the information. Does the person sharing information include reliable sources?
  • Consider the sensationalism of the information. If something feels too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Consider the website. Try to identify safe online pharmacies selling peptides.
