Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic respiratory condition characterized by airflow obstruction in the lungs, making breathing difficult.

It is a progressive disease that cannot be cured, but with proper management, its symptoms can be managed to improve quality of life.

It’s important to remember that these natural remedies will not cure COPD, but when used alongside medical treatments, may help ease symptoms and slow progression.

Lifestyle strategies

Applying certain lifestyle strategies can have a positive effect on managing COPD. These changes may include:

  • Quitting smoking: If you smoke, quitting is the most crucial step to slow down, or even reverse (if caught early enough), the progression of COPD and reduce respiratory symptoms such as shortness of breath. Consider seeking support from a doctor to increase your chances of success.
  • Avoiding exposure to irritants: Minimize exposure to environmental irritants such as secondhand smoke, dust, air pollution, and chemical fumes. These can worsen COPD symptoms and trigger flare-ups. Instead, use air purifiers, keep your living space well ventilated, and wear a mask when necessary.
  • Regular exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity, as advised by a doctor, can strengthen your respiratory muscles, improve lung function, and enhance overall endurance. Consider activities like walking, swimming, or cycling that promote cardiovascular fitness.
  • Eating a balanced diet: Focus on a nutrient-rich diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Adequate nutrition supports your immune system and overall respiratory health.
  • Maintaining a moderate weight: Achieving and maintaining a weight that’s healthy for you is important for managing COPD. Excess weight can strain your respiratory system, making breathing more difficult.

Supplements and herbal remedies

Supplements and herbal remedies may support managing COPD symptoms, but it’s important to consult a doctor before starting any new supplement or herbal remedy. Some options to consider may include:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids: In fish oil supplements, omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties that may reduce lung inflammation and improve COPD symptoms. But the evidence is limited, and more studies are needed.
  • N-acetylcysteine (NAC): NAC is an antioxidant that can help thin mucus, making it easier to clear your airways. It may also have some bronchodilator effects, which can reduce exacerbations in COPD.
  • Herbal teas: Certain herbal teas, such as green tea, may help soothe respiratory symptoms, relieve congestion, and provide a calming effect.

Essential oils

Essential oils, when used with caution, may provide respiratory benefits for COPD. Still, essential oils can be potent, and some people may be sensitive or have adverse reactions. It’s important to dilute them properly with a carrier oil, and make sure you use them following medical advice.

Some essential oils to consider include:

  • Eucalyptus oil: A 2020 study suggested that 1,8-cineole, a compound found in eucalyptus oil, may help open airways, reduce mucus production, and prevent COPD flare-ups.
  • Peppermint oil: Peppermint oil has a cooling effect and may relieve respiratory symptoms, including congestion. Dilute it properly and use caution when inhaling or applying topically.
  • Lavender oil: Known for its calming properties, it may reduce anxiety and promote better sleep, benefiting people with COPD. Use it in a diffuser or diluted in a carrier oil for massage.

While research suggests there are health benefits, the FDA doesn’t monitor or regulate the purity or quality of essential oils. It’s important to talk with a healthcare professional before you begin using essential oils and be sure to research the quality of a brand’s products. Always do a patch test before trying a new essential oil.

Breathing exercises

Engaging in specific breathing exercises like pursed-lip breathing and diaphragmatic breathing can help improve lung function, reduce breathlessness, and enhance overall respiratory well-being.

Humidification

Using a humidifier at home can add moisture to the air, which may help alleviate dryness and irritation in your airways. Moist air can make breathing easier and reduce the risk of exacerbations.

Other treatments

In addition to lifestyle changes and home remedies, there are various other treatments available for COPD, including:

  • Medications: A doctor may prescribe medications to manage COPD. These include bronchodilators to help relax and open the airways, making breathing easier. These can be in the form of inhalers or nebulizers. Common options include formoterol (Perforomist) and ipratropium.
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation: Pulmonary rehabilitation programs are structured interventions that combine exercise training, education, breathing techniques, and emotional support. These programs are designed to improve lung function, increase exercise tolerance, and enhance overall quality of life.
  • Oxygen therapy: If your blood oxygen levels are low, a doctor may prescribe oxygen therapy. This involves using an oxygen concentrator or portable oxygen tank to deliver extra oxygen to your lungs and improve your overall oxygen levels.
  • Surgical interventions: In severe COPD, doctors may recommend surgical interventions such as lung volume reduction, which removes damaged portions of the lung, or lung transplantation, where other treatments have been unsuccessful.
  • Acupuncture: According to 2021 research, acupuncture has a range of benefits in COPD, including improving the strength of your diaphragm, improving the function of your lungs, and preventing respiratory failure.
