Statins are medications for reducing cholesterol levels. There is well-documented evidence around the benefits of statins for those at risk of cardiovascular diseases, and little evidence suggests they cause dementia.

Scientists have not yet provided definitive proof of a link between statins and dementia.

However, some studies show a potential correlation between the two.

What does the research say about statins and dementia?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease.

2021 study looked at the association between statin use and Alzheimer’s disease based on dosage. It found that short-term statin use had links to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. But prolonged statin use had associations with decreased risk.

However, another 2022 study revealed no neurological risks associated with statin treatment and Alzheimer’s disease.

These research studies demonstrate that the relationship between statins and dementia remains an ongoing debate among researchers.

Are there links between statins and memory loss?

Due to inconsistent research findings, there is no clear connection between statins and memory loss. But, there are several research studies on the association between statin and memory loss.

A 2021 study revealed no higher incidence of memory loss among study participants above 65 years who used statins.

Additionally, according to a 2016 review, there was no clear evidence to explain the relationship between cognitive decline and statin use.

But a 2021 study on people with mild cognitive impairment found that some participants who took a specific type of statin were more likely to develop Alzheimer’s after 8 years than those who did not.

If you notice any cognitive changes while on statins, consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Do the benefits outweigh the risks?

The benefits and risks of statin intake typically vary by person. However, statins may benefit you by lowering your blood cholesterol levels.

Statins, such as atorvastatin (Lipitor) or simvastatin (Zocor), help decrease the blood level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which plays a role in cardiovascular conditions.

As a result, statins help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack or stroke, that may occur due to blood vessel damage caused by high LDL cholesterol levels.

Statins also have other potential benefits, such as:

  • anti-inflammatory effects
  • anti-thrombotic properties, or properties that help prevent blood clots
  • improving specific cell function

Statins may also pose some risks, including common side effects like:

  • muscle pain or weakness
  • liver damage
  • risk of type 2 diabetes due to a possible slight blood sugar increase

A doctor or healthcare professional can advise you on whether the benefits of statins outweigh the risks based on your needs and health history.

Talking with a doctor

Discuss the pros and cons of using statins for your particular circumstances with a doctor or healthcare professional. They will typically guide you based on your clinical history and provide personalized advice. Also, your doctor may consider changing your medications if they are unsuitable.

Generally, your current medical status and cardiovascular risk factors will help determine if you will benefit from statins.

If you experience any memory or thinking difficulties after taking statins that you think may relate to them, discuss your concerns with a healthcare team as soon as possible.

Summary

No conclusive evidence exists regarding the risk of cognitive impairment and statin use. Several studies have inconsistent findings on the association between dementia and statin intake, so further research is necessary.

Statin intake has its benefits and risks. Getting professional guidance from your doctor is crucial to determine whether the benefits outweigh the risks.

Your doctor will typically combine findings from your unique medical history and cardiovascular risks to counsel you.

Consult your doctor before deciding to start or stop taking statins.
