Do you find that you have a hard time staying focused at school or work? Is it difficult for you to sit still, or do you find yourself acting impulsively? Do these tendencies have a negative impact on your life? If so, you might have a very real neuro-biological disorder, commonly referred to as “ADHD” or “ADD”. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or attention deficit disorder, is a very real medical condition that could be managed and improved with medical intervention. There’s a reason you can’t get your brain to shut off at night!
If you think that you could have ADHD, you aren’t alone. Over 6 million children alone get diagnosed with ADHD, but this isn’t just a childhood disorder. Estimates show that about 4% of adults deal with ADHD symptoms on a daily basis, and adults are more likely to go without a diagnosis than children. Often, adults with ADHD have had symptoms since childhood, but were simply dismissed as “the troublemakers”. Were you the kid in school that always got sent to the principal’s office? Maybe it wasn’t really your fault! If you suffer from ADHD symptoms, talk to your doctor – they will be able to help you with a diagnosis. You don’t have to live your life being distracted by all of the “shiny things”!
If you get an ADHD diagnosis, it is very likely that you could be prescribed a medication that will help to alleviate your symptoms. One of the most well know, and commonly prescribed medications goes by the brand name of Adderall. Adderall is a chemical combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine. These drugs are central nervous system stimulants that work to affect the nerves and chemicals in your brain that contribute to attention, hyperactivity, and impulse control. Despite the fact that they’re classified as stimulants, they have the opposite effect on your brain activity – “slowing its roll” so to speak.
