Lipitor is prescribed along with a healthy diet to treat high cholesterol and to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack and angina.

Lipitor only comes in the form of a tablet to be taken orally. Most patients will be started on a dose between 10 and 20mg per day. Patients with excessively high LDL levels may be started on 40mg per day. The maximum dose is 80mg per day. Children that have to take Lipitor will be started on a dose of 10mg once daily.
