The active ingredient in Kapvay works to reduce hyperactivity and improve cognitive ability in patients who suffer from attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It stimulates alpha2-adrenergic receptors in the brain, but does not directly stimulate the central nervous system as the majority of ADHD medications do.
Take Kapvay tablets once in the morning and once before bed. If your doctor recommends taking two different doses, take the larger dose at bedtime. Patients can swallow tablets with or without food, but should not use two different forms of the active ingredient clonidine at the same time.
If you have been scheduled for surgery, tell the surgeon before the date of your surgery that you use Kapvay. The surgeon may require you to stop use of this medication for some time before and after surgery. Do not stop taking this drug suddenly or you may experience intense withdrawal symptoms. Call your doctor if you are vomiting or feel persistently sick. Your body may be unable to absorb Kapvay if you cannot keep your stomach contents in your body.
