Uses
Uses of dronabinol
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves prescription drugs such as dronabinol for certain conditions. Approved uses for dronabinol are described below.
Use for nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy
Doctors may prescribe dronabinol oral capsule for treating nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy (traditional drugs prescribed to treat cancer) when other treatments haven’t worked. It’s used for this purpose in adults. It’s usually prescribed as a short-term treatment during chemotherapy treatment.
With chemotherapy, nausea and vomiting are very common side effects. They can become severe and lead to complications, such as dehydration (low fluid level). They can also reduce your quality of life while you have cancer treatment. Dronabinol can help manage these side effects.
Doctors may not prescribe dronabinol oral capsule in certain situations, such as for people who are allergic to sesame oil.
Use for weight loss due to anorexia in people with AIDS

With AIDS, advanced HIV causes several problems that can lead to weight loss and wasting. Lack of appetite is one of these factors. People with HIV wasting syndrome are also often weak and have fevers, diarrhea, or both. Dronabinol can help stimulate appetite and weight gain in these people.
Doctors may not prescribe dronabinol oral capsule in certain situations, such as for people who are allergic to sesame oil.
FAQs
Common questions about dronabinol
Below you’ll find answers to a few commonly asked questions about dronabinol.
What brand names are available for dronabinol?
Dronabinol oral capsule is available as the brand-name drug Marinol. There is also a liquid form available as the brand-name drug Syndros.
A generic medication is an identical copy of the active drug in a brand-name medication. (An active drug is the ingredient that makes a medication work.) Generic drugs are believed to be as effective and safe as brand-name drugs. And generic drugs usually cost less compared with brand-name drugs.
To learn more about the brand-name versions of dronabinol, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.
Is dronabinol safe for older adults?
It’s possible. Older adults (ages 65 years and older) may be more sensitive to some of the side effects of dronabinol. These include low blood pressure, problems thinking clearly, dizziness, and sleepiness. As a result, older adults may have a higher risk of falls while taking dronabinol. Because of this, doctors often start by prescribing lower dosage of the medication to older adults.
If you’re an older adult and have questions about taking dronabinol, talk with your doctor.
How does dronabinol work? And how long does it take to start working?
Dronabinol works in the brain. It affects areas that manage appetite, nausea, and vomiting. This is how the drug works to treat a lack of appetite or nausea and vomiting. It can also affect the heart and blood vessels and areas of the brain involved in memory and thinking. This is how the drug causes some of its side effects.
Dronabinol usually starts to work within 1 hour of taking it. You should experience its peak effects around 2-4 hours after taking it, and its effects should last about 6 hours. The drug’s effects on appetite can last up to 24 hours.
If you’d like to know more about this, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.
Is misuse, withdrawal, or dependence possible with dronabinol?
Yes, misuse, withdrawal, and dependence are possible with dronabinol.
With misuse, a drug is taken in a way other than how it’s prescribed. Dependence means your body needs the drug to function as usual. Withdrawal symptoms can occur if your body is dependent on a drug and you stop taking it.
Due to these risks, dronabinol is a Schedule III prescription drug, which is a type of controlled substance. A controlled substance is a drug the government regulates due to the risk of dependence or misuse.
If you have more questions about misuse, withdrawal, or dependence with dronabinol, talk with your doctor.
