Why is Farxiga so expensive?

Farxiga is a brand-name medication. Brand-name drugs can be expensive because of costly studies needed to test their safety and effectiveness before they can be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the United States.

The maker of a brand-name drug that gains FDA approval can patent and sell the drug for up to 20 years. When the patent for a brand-name drug expires, other drugmakers can make and sell generic versions of the drug.

Generic medications contain the same active ingredients as the brand-name drugs they’re designed to mimic. An active ingredient is what makes medication work. So generics don’t require the same costly testing for FDA approval. For this reason, generic drugs usually cost significantly less than brand-name medications like Farxiga.

If you can’t afford Farxiga, ask your doctor if it’s acceptable to be prescribed the generic version of the drug instead. The generic version is called dapagliflozin (dap a gli FLOE zin).

Can I get a Farxiga coupon for Medicare?

The cost of Farxiga may or may not be covered by Medicare. It depends on your specific Medicare policy and whether you have a Medicare Part D plan. No special coupon is required.
