Your body has red blood cells, or RBCs, that carry oxygen to the rest of your body. RBCs are made in your bone marrow. They need a special protein called hemoglobin to carry oxygen. Your body needs iron and other nutrients to make new hemoglobin and blood cells. Anemia is when the body does not have enough red blood cells to carry oxygen to all parts of your body. Normocytic normochromic anemia is one kind of anemia. The name talks about the size of the RBC and the amount of hemoglobin in the RBCs. In this kind of anemia, the RBCs are normal size and they have a normal amount of hemoglobin in each cell. With this kind of anemia, you have less RBCs overall. The amount of hemoglobin in each cell is normal. Because there are less red blood cells, your body has problems getting enough oxygen to the tissues. This kind of anemia is a result of another disease going on in your body.
