Omeprazole is a generic medication that can reduce the amount of acid your stomach produces. It’s also available under the brand name Prilosec. Doctors use it to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • frequent heartburn
  • esophagitis
  • peptic ulcer disease

Omeprazole is available over the counter (OTC) in lower doses to manage heartburn. Doctors may prescribe a stronger version for some conditions. It’s important to take the medication according to the doctor’s instructions or the guidelines in the packaging.

What is omeprazole?

Omeprazole belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These medications work on the cells in your stomach that contain the enzyme known as the proton pump. Drugs like omeprazole block this enzyme, which is the final step of acid secretion into your stomach.

So this can reduce the amount of acid in your stomach. This is why the medication can help treat conditions linked with excess acid production, such as GERD. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved it to treat:

  • esophagitis
  • non-erosive reflux disease
  • prevention of ulcers caused by certain medications
  • gastric ulcers
  • Zollinger–Ellison syndrome
  • Helicobacter pylori infection, when used as part of a combination treatment

The OTC form can also manage frequent heartburn, even if you don’t receive a diagnosis of a condition like GERD.

Healthcare professionals generally consider it to be safe and effective, but like any drug, omeprazole may cause some side effects. These include:

  • headaches
  • abdominal pain
  • diarrhea
  • nausea
  • vomiting

When is the best time to take omeprazole?

You should generally take omeprazole once per day. The most important thing is to remember to take it consistently for the entire course of your treatment. However, the FDA recommends taking it in the morning before eating. This allows the drug to get to work throughout the day when you need it most.

Generally, food triggers GERD symptoms. If you take omeprazole at least 1 hour before eating breakfast, this allows the medication to exert its effects on your stomach acid production as soon as you need it.

What’s more, a 2020 research suggests that taking omeprazole with food may delay its absorption into your blood, which may make it less effective. The researchers recommend taking PPIs like omeprazole on an empty stomach — generally, in the morning before breakfast.

However, no research suggests that taking omeprazole with food can increase severe side effects. As noted, the most important thing is to ensure you’re taking it every day as your doctor prescribes it. If it’s better for your routine to take it after a meal, this is unlikely to greatly affect your treatment.

For long-term conditions like acid reflux and stomach ulcers, it’s important to take omeprazole at the same time every day. This helps the medication build up its effects, giving your stomach consistent protection from acid. Even if you get relief from your symptoms, it’s important to keep taking it daily as your doctor recommends.

Dosage and administration of omeprazole

The OTC form of omeprazole is 20 milligrams (mg), which you should take once per day for 14 days. You may notice your symptoms easing within 24 hours, but it will likely take up to 4 days to have its full effect. It comes in delayed-release tablet form. This means it doesn’t get to work right away.

The prescription form will also vary depending on the condition that it’s treating, and it usually comes in capsule form. For GERD, you should take 20 mg once per day for up to 4 weeks. The dose for an active benign gastric ulcer is 40 mg for 4 to 8 weeks.

For conditions like Zollinger–Ellison syndrome, doctors may start with 60 mg, but dosages up to 120 mg three times per day are also possible. Higher doses may be related to a higher likelihood of side effects.

If you forget to take a dose of omeprazole, you should take it as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for your next dose. If this is the case, just skip the missed one — avoid taking two doses at the same time. Doubling up won’t make up for the missed dose and could cause side effects.

Summary

Omeprazole is a generic medication used to manage excess stomach acid. The OTC form can manage frequent heartburn, or doctors may prescribe the drug to treat medical conditions like GERD, stomach ulcers, or esophagitis.

The best time to take omeprazole is first thing in the morning before you eat anything. This allows the medication to work throughout the day and exert its effect on stomach acid as needed. An empty stomach may also allow the medication to be absorbed as fully as possible.

The most important thing is to take the medication consistently and follow the doctor’s instructions. If taking the medication at night, for example, fits better in your routine, this may help you to be consistent with your medication, which in turn can make sure your treatment is as successful as possible.
