Dosage of Rybelsus

This article describes the recommended dosages for Rybelsus. The drugmaker provides these dosages. In some cases, doctors may adjust your dosage from those shown below.

If your doctor prescribes this medication, you should follow the dosage they prescribe. Your doctor will determine the dosage that best meets your needs. Do not change your dosage of Rybelsus without your doctor’s recommendation.

Usual recommended dosages of Rybelsus in adults

Usually, doctors start by prescribing a low dosage of Rybelsus. Then, they’ll adjust it over time until the right dosage is reached. Ultimately, your doctor will prescribe the smallest dosage of Rybelsus that helps you reach your blood sugar goals.

The recommended dosing schedule for Rybelsus is as follows:

  • The starting dosage is 3 mg once per day for 30 days.
  • After 30 days, your doctor will increase your dosage to 7 mg once per day.
  • If after 30 days you haven’t met your blood sugar goals, your doctor may increase your dosage to 14 mg once per day.
  • The maximum dosage of Rybelsus is 14 mg once per day.

You should take Rybelsus in the morning at least 30 minutes before any food, drinks, or other medications. Take it with no more than 4 ounces of water. Rybelsus oral tablets should be swallowed whole. They should not be chewed, broken, or cut.

Frequently asked questions

Below are answers to some commonly asked questions about Rybelsus and its dosage.

Can I take Rybelsus for weight loss? If so, what is the Rybelsus dosage for weight loss?

Rybelsus is not approved by the FDA as a weight loss medication. It’s approved for use to manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes, along with a healthy diet and exercise.

In some cases, doctors may prescribe Rybelsus off-label for weight loss. With off-label use, doctors prescribe a drug for a purpose other than what it’s approved for.

If you have questions about treatment options for weight loss, talk with your doctor.

Note: Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription medication that’s specifically approved for weight management. It contains semaglutide, which is the same active ingredient in Rybelsus. An active ingredient is what makes a medication work. If you want to learn more about Wegovy for weight loss, talk with your doctor.

What is the Rybelsus dose that’s equivalent to Ozempic?

Rybelsus and Ozempic are both prescribed to manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. Ozempic is also prescribed to lower the risk of heart and blood vessel problems in adults with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

While Rybelsus and Ozempic are taken for similar purposes, they come in different forms. Rybelsus comes as an oral tablet that you swallow. Ozempic comes as an injection that’s given under your skin.

In some cases, doctors may switch you from Rybelsus to Ozempic, or vice versa. If you’re taking Rybelsus at a dosage of 14 mg once per day, your doctor can switch you to Ozempic 0.5 mg once per week. If you’re taking Ozempic 0.5 mg once per week, your doctor may switch you to Rybelsus 7 mg or 14 mg once per day.

If you have more questions about switching between Rybelsus and Ozempic, talk with your doctor.

Can I take two 3-mg doses of Rybelsus?

No. It is not recommended to take two 3-mg doses of Rybelsus at any point during treatment.

The recommended starting dosage of Rybelsus is 3 mg once per day for 30 days. After 30 days, your doctor will increase your dosage to 7 mg once per day. If you haven’t met your blood sugar goals after 30 days of taking the 7-mg dose, your doctor may increase your dosage to 14 mg once per day.

Note: If a daily dosage of 14 mg of Rybelsus is needed, take one 14-mg tablet per day. Taking two 7-mg tablets instead of one 14-mg tablet is not recommended.

If you have more questions about your Rybelsus dosage, talk with your doctor.

Boxed warning for Rybelsus

Rybelsus has a boxed warning for the risk of thyroid tumors, including cancer. A boxed warning is the most serious warning from the FDA.

In animal studies, semaglutide (the active ingredient in Rybelsus) caused a certain type of thyroid tumor in rodents. But animal studies don’t always reflect what can happen in people. It’s not known whether Rybelsus causes thyroid cancer in humans.

Due to this risk, doctors typically won’t prescribe Rybelsus if you or a family member has a history of medullary thyroid cancer (a rare type of thyroid cancer) or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2).
