Form and strength of Pregnyl

Pregnyl injection comes as follows:

  • Form: a solution that you inject into your muscle
  • Strength: 10,000 USP units per 10 milliliters (mL) vial

Pregnyl comes as a package that contains two vials. One vial contains the drug in powder form. The other vial contains a liquid that needs to be mixed with the powder before injecting.

Note that the strength of Pregnyl is measured in USP units. A USP unit is a unit measuring how strong a drug is based on the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). The USP is a reference to standard tested formulations of drugs to ensure quality, strength, and purity.

Usual recommended dosages of Pregnyl in adults

Pregnyl injection can be given in males* who experience certain types of hypogonadism. (Hypogonadism occurs when the sex glands produce little to no sex hormones.) There are several options for the dosage of Pregnyl injection:

  • 500 USP units to 1,000 USP units 3 times a week for 3 weeks, followed by the same dose twice a week for 3 weeks
  • 4,000 USP units 3 times weekly for 6–9 months. After this, the dosage may be reduced to 2,000 USP units 3 times a week for an additional 3 months

Pregnyl injection can also be given to induce ovulation or pregnancy in women* with certain types of infertility. Doctors usually prescribe it to women who have also received treatment with gonadotropins, sometimes called menotropins. The usual dosage of Pregnyl injection for this is:

  • 5,000 USP units to 10,000 USP units 1 day following the last dose of gonadotropins

For all uses, Pregnyl should only be injected into your muscle.

Note that the strength of Pregnyl is measured in USP units. A USP unit is a unit measuring how strong a drug is based on the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). The USP is a reference to standard tested formulations of drugs to ensure quality, strength, and purity.
