Silver sulfadiazine is a cream that helps prevent sepsis from developing in people with burns.

It’s a topical antiseptic, which means it helps kill bacteria and other foreign microorganisms that may occur in burn wounds. It’s very safe and with little chance of allergy.

For it to work effectively, silver sulfadiazine creams need continuous application until the burn fully heals or is ready for further surgery. This is to prevent any chance of infection, such as sepsis, which is a healthcare emergency.

The aim of using silver sulfadiazine cream on a burn wound is to prevent infection and help reduce inflammation to promote healing. It kills any bacteria in the wound and prevents serious infection.

Within 5 days of your first use of the cream on the wound, your white blood cells, responsible for fighting infections, should start to go down in number and return to their usual levels.

According to a 2017 study, silver sulfadiazine may take up to 20 days to begin to see full healing of the burn wound and an average of 27 days for healing to finish.

You may notice your pain start to ease 2 weeks after first using the cream.

What can affect the effectiveness of silver sulfadiazine?

Silver sulfadiazine creams work by killing harmful bacteria or preventing growth in your burn wound.

The cream is effective due to its silver component. Silver is a natural antibiotic, but unlike other medicinal antibiotics, it works against resistant strains of bacteria.

It does this by creating holes in the bacteria wall and preventing it from being able to get rid of toxic waste inside it. This stops the bacteria from functioning and reproducing.

To make sure the silver sulfadiazine cream prevents infection, you must continue to use the cream until the skin is not broken.

If you require a skin graft, you will need to use the cream until a healthcare professional recommends you’re at the stage of healing where they can perform the graft.

How to apply silver sulfadiazine

You should apply the silver sulfadiazine cream two times per day.

You should use enough cream to make up a thickness of around 1/16 inches. Burn wounds need constant coverage of silver sulfadiazine cream, so if you lose any during daily activities, make sure you recoat your wound.

The prescribing doctor may determine the dose of cream you receive. It will depend on the severity of the wound or the severity of the infection.

It’s essential to apply the cream on the burn wound in a sterile way to avoid introducing new bacteria.

Steps to take during application include:

  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Sterilize and clean your wound.
  3. Remove any dead skin or debris from the wound.
  4. Using a clean cotton swab, apply cream to the burn areas.
  5. Never ‘double dip’ your cotton swab, if you need more cream, use a new swab.
  6. Once the areas have an even coating dress them in bandages or leave them open if suggested by a doctor.

If you notice any peeling, sores, or ulcers developing on your skin, then stop the medication immediately and speak with a healthcare professional. If you experience a fever or chills, get medical attention as soon as possible.

Store your cream in a sealed container at room temperature, away from heat, light, and moisture. It’s important not to use the cream after its expiration date.
