Like any medication, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1s) can cause some side effects that may be mild to severe. Many of these side effects are common early in treatment as your body gets used to the medication. Fatigue (low energy) is one side effect that’s commonly reported with GLP-1s.

Whether you’ll experience fatigue and tiredness through treatment typically depends on individual responses to the medication. It may also depend on the specific drug you’re taking — for example, Wegovy has the highest percentage of fatigue reports at 11%.

However, fatigue may be a side effect of other GLP-1s, including:

  • Ozempic
  • Zepbound
  • Rybelsus

How do GLP-1s cause fatigue?

There are several reasons that GLP-1s can cause your energy levels to dip:

  • Reduced calorie intake: GLP-1 medications work by slowing your stomach emptying and signaling your brain to feel full, reducing your appetite. This often leads to a reduction in how much you eat. If your body isn’t receiving enough fuel, your energy levels will naturally fall. You might also have fewer essential nutrients in your diet as you eat less.
  • Effect on metabolism: GLP-1s notably impact your metabolism — specifically, your body’s secretion of insulin and absorption of glucose. This can cause blood sugar dips, resulting in tiredness and brain fog.
  • Dehydration: GLP-1s slow down your digestion, which can make you less thirsty and lead to mild dehydration. Gastrointestinal side effects like nausea or diarrhea may also lead to dehydration, leading you to lose vital fluids and electrolytes. This can cause fatigue.

How to manage GLP-1 fatigue

Fatigue caused by GLP-1s is typically temporary. It’s most common in the titration stage of your treatment. However, if fatigue is impacting you, there are different ways you can try to manage it:

  • Prioritize nutrition: Making sure you’re eating nutrient-dense meals can help support your treatment and make sure you’re getting enough vital nutrients. Eating protein-rich foods can also help retain muscle mass throughout weight loss.
  • Stay hydrated: Staying hydrated, particularly with electrolytes, can reduce fatigue associated with dehydration.
  • Exercise regularly: Exercise is typically recommended to support GLP-1 treatment, and it can also help boost your energy levels.
