Frequently asked questions
Below are answers to some commonly asked questions about Pradaxa and its dosage.
Is the dosage of Pradaxa different for older adults?
Not necessarily. But your doctor may adjust your dosage of Pradaxa depending on your kidney function. Older adults (ages 65 and older) have an increased risk of lower kidney function. So your dosage of Pradaxa may be lower. Instead of taking 150 mg twice per day, you’d likely take 75 mg twice per day, which would be the lowest dose of Pradaxa.
Talk with your doctor if you have questions about Pradaxa’s dosage for older adults.
What’s the difference between Pradaxa 110-mg and 150-mg doses?
These doses are prescribed for different purposes in adults. Pradaxa 110-mg capsules are used to help prevent DVT and PE after hip surgery. You’ll take 110 mg once on the first day and then 220 mg per day afterward.
Pradaxa 150-mg capsules are prescribed to people who have already had a DVT or PE. This is to help reduce the risk of having another DVT or PE. In this case, you’ll take 150 mg twice per day.
Talk with your doctor if you have questions about how the dosages of Pradaxa compare. For more details, see the “Dosage of Pradaxa” section above.
What should I do for a missed dose of Pradaxa?
If you realize you forgot to take a dose of Pradaxa, take your dose as soon as you remember. But you should skip the missed dose if you cannot take it at least 6 hours before your next scheduled dose. You should not take two doses at the same time.
If you have questions about your missed dose, tell your doctor or pharmacist right away. They may advise you to take the missed dose. Or they may advise you to skip it and take your next dose as scheduled.

Pradaxa has boxed warnings about the risk of clotting events if stopped too soon and the risk of spinal and epidural hematomas. A boxed warning is the most serious warning from the FDA.
Risk of clotting events if stopped too soon: Stopping any blood thinner, including Pradaxa, too soon could raise your risk of having a blood clot. This includes a DVT, PE, stroke, and heart attack. You should not stop taking Pradaxa without first talking with your doctor.
Risk of spinal and epidural hematomas: Pradaxa can increase your risk of having a spinal or epidural hematoma if you’re having certain spinal procedures. (A hematoma is a mass of blood that forms.) Spinal or epidural hematomas can cause permanent paralysis. You should tell your doctor you’re taking Pradaxa before having any spinal procedures. Your doctor will likely recommend you stop taking Pradaxa for a certain amount of time before and after your procedure.
