Overview

Gabapentin, also known by the brand name Neurontin, is a prescription-only medication. Doctors prescribe it to treat nerve pain and seizures and sometimes as an off-label treatment for sleep and anxiety disorders. Off-label use is when a healthcare professional prescribes a medication for a condition other than what the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved it to treat.

Gabapentin may take a few hours after the first dose to make you sleepy, but this can vary.

While doctors don’t typically prescribe gabapentin as a sleep aid, they sometimes prescribe it off-label to improve sleep quality

Gabapentin doesn’t make you feel sleepy right away. Some people may start to feel drowsy as it reaches peak concentration in the bloodstream, usually about 2 to 3 hours after taking it.

The onset of gabapentin’s effects can vary depending on your:

  • metabolism
  • dosage
  • severity of insomnia
  • other underlying medical conditions

Food has only a slight effect on how your body absorbs gabapentin. So taking gabapentin with food or eating after taking it shouldn’t significantly affect how quickly or how well gabapentin works. Some people may feel sleepy soon after taking it, but it may take longer in others for gabapentin to work for sleep.

It’s important to give gabapentin some time to see whether it’s effective for sleep. This allows your body to adjust to the medication. This may also make it easier to notice any effects it has on your sleep.

If you’re taking gabapentin for sleep and don’t notice an improvement in sleep quality within 7 days, or if your symptoms worsen, talk with your doctor. They may adjust your treatment plan or dosage or consider other treatment options.

What is the dosage of gabapentin for sleep?

Since gabapentin is not FDA-approved for treating insomnia or sleep disorders, there is no specific FDA-approved dose of gabapentin for sleep. But one study found that adults who took 250 milligrams (mg) or 500 mg of gabapentin 30 minutes before bedtime had improved sleep time and sleep quality with no significant adverse effects.

Your doctor will likely start you on a low dose of gabapentin and adjust it over time to reach the right amount for you. They’ll ultimately prescribe the smallest dosage that provides the desired effect.

Be sure to take the dosage your doctor prescribes for you. They’ll determine the best dosage to fit your needs. Sometimes, your doctor may adjust your dosage based on your response to the medication and if you experience any gabapentin side effects.

When should you take gabapentin for sleep?

Healthcare professionals recommend taking gabapentin 1 to 2 hours before bedtime. This allows time for your body to absorb it fully. The drug typically reaches peak levels in your bloodstream within 2 to 3 hours.

This timing helps gabapentin reach its peak as you are preparing to go to bed or are already sleeping. This may help you fall asleep faster and improve the quality of your sleep.

However, the best time for you to take gabapentin for sleep may vary, so it’s important to follow your doctor’s guidance.

Your doctor will take into account any other medications you’re taking and may adjust the timing based on how gabapentin affects you.

Summary

Gabapentin is a prescription-only medication. It may help you sleep by inducing drowsiness within 2 to 3 hours after you take it, though this can vary from person to person.

If gabapentin isn’t making you sleepy after taking it for 1 week or if it’s causing side effects that bother you, talk with a healthcare professional about other options or possible dosage adjustments.
