Overview

Celery juice contains nutrients that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Depending on the amount consumed, celery juice benefits may include healthy amounts of calcium, potassium, and vitamins A, C, and K. As it’s mainly water, celery can also help to hydrate you.

One cup (236 grams [g]) of celery juice has only 33 calories, 7.01 g of carbohydrates, and 3.16 g of sugar. It packs 7% of your daily calcium intake, 13% of your daily potassium intake, 8% of your daily vitamin C needs, and 58% of the vitamin K you require.

It also contains zinc, copper, folate, and B vitamins, such as biotin.

Another key component of celery juice’s health benefits is its antioxidant properties. Celery juice is high in phytonutrients, and studies show that extracts from the celery plant can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in cells.

Celery juice can form part of an antioxidant-rich diet that may help with chronic conditions like heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and some forms of cancer.

Much of the research into the benefits of celery and celery juice involves animal studies. More human studies are needed before the claims can apply to humans.

Luteolin and pyrroloquinoline quinone are other vitamin-like compounds found in plant foods, including celery, which some research indicates may help reduce inflammation.

Unstrained celery juice also contains fiber, which is helpful for those who need to add more to their diet.

Benefits in different conditions

Celery juice may help with conditions such as diabetes and constipation.

Diabetes

Celery juice may help with diabetes in two ways. Generally, it’s quite low in sugar and can replace sugary drinks like soda and fruit juice. It also contains apigenin, a natural plant compound that reduces inflammation and may support type 2 diabetes.

Metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is the term used to refer to the combination of diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity.

As part of a calorie-restricted diet, celery can help support weight management. That’s because it’s low in sugar yet provides a lot of nutrients. Celery has a high water content, so it also provides hydration, an important part of weight management.

Some older 2013 research has also found that apigenin in celery can help improve metabolic syndrome in animals, although human studies are needed.

Constipation

If you have constipation, drinking unfiltered celery juice is a way to add fiber to your diet. Its high water content has a flushing effect on the body, which can help with constipation.

Cancer

Though more research is needed, some medical studies indicate that celery juice has cancer-fighting phytochemicals and vitamins, like apigenin. These are easily absorbed into the body when you drink it.

Can it be harmful?

Some conditions do not tolerate celery juice well. One of them is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). That’s because celery juice contains FODMAPS, or fermentable carbohydrates, which cause bloating and discomfort that can worsen IBS.

It also contains sodium. One 236 g cup contains 8% of the recommended daily intake for all food and drinks consumed. For those on a salt-restricted diet for medical reasons such as high blood pressure, consider speaking with a doctor or dietitian before drinking celery juice.

Celery juice may interact with certain medications, such as anticoagulants. You can check with a healthcare professional about potential adverse reactions before consuming a lot of celery juice.

People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or nursing should also consult with a doctor before consuming celery juice.

Summary

Celery juice has considerable health benefits. It contains vitamins, particularly vitamin K, calcium, and antioxidants. It’s also known to be an anti-inflammatory, so it can support inflammatory diseases. It may also be beneficial for metabolic conditions like obesity and diabetes.

People who are pregnant, nursing, or who have a medical condition restricting sodium or vitamin K intake, should consult a healthcare professional before drinking celery juice.
