Avodart is a drug that contains dutasteride. It works to prevent testosterone from converting to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in men. DHT is one of many substances that contribute to the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), an increase in the size of the prostate. Avodart helps to treat BPH by reducing the triggers that cause enlargement of the prostate. Avodart is used primarily to inhibit the formation of DHT in men who suffer from BPH. The inhibition of DHT delays or stops the primary cause of BPH and relieves the associated symptoms.
Avodart is taken orally with or without food. It is most effective when swallowed whole. Do not break, chew, open, or crush Avodart pills before you swallow them. Do not take capsules that have been opened, cracked, deformed, discolored, or are leaking. The drug dutasteride contained within Avodart can cause irritation on your lips, mouth, and throat. Be sure to take Avodart on a regular schedule to receive the largest benefit. Do not stop taking Avodart, even if you begin to feel well.
Avodart may increase risk for birth defects, including an abnormal formation of male or female genitals in fetuses. Do not use if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. This medication will remain in the blood stream 4-6 months after cessation. Use of the drug Avodart may cause an increase in the risk of certain types of prostate cancer and male breast cancer. It may also decrease sexual desire and ability, and could cause a decrease in the volume of semen during ejaculation.
