This medication is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and angina, often in combination with changes in diet and exercise. Sometimes it may be used with other drugs, especially to treat heart failure, and it can be used to treat or prevent heart attack.
Toprol XL is only available as an extended release medication that is taken by mouth one time daily. The standard starting dose is 25mg, although that may be raised to 100mg. The maximum dose is usually 400mg.
You should not use this medication if you have certain cardiovascular problems at severe levels, including circulation problems, heart failure, slow heartbeats that can cause fainting, slow heart rate, heart block, or sick sinus syndrome. You also should not use Toprol XL if you have had an allergic reaction to other beta-blockers.
