Stromectol (generic name is Ivermectin) is used to treat certain infections caused by parasites, such as river blindness (onchocerciasis) and threadworm (strongyloidiasis).
Stromectol is in a class of drugs called anthelmintics, and it works to treat threadworm by killing the worms in the intestine that cause the infection. This drug works to control river blindness by killing developing worms; however, it will not kill the adult worms that cause this infection, and thus it is not a cure for river blindness.
Stromectol is usually taken as a single dose on an empty stomach with water to treat threadworm. If you are taking Stromectol for the treatment of river blindness, it may be necessary to take additional doses of this drug 3, 6, or 12 months later to control the infection.
The recommended Stromectol dose for the treatment of these conditions is approximately 200 mcg per kg of the patient’s body weight.
Consult with your doctor for specific dosage information for this drug for the treatment of your infection.
