Samsca is used to treat dangerously low levels of sodium in patients that are either overly hydrated or have low sodium levels due to heart failure. Samsca may also be used to treat patients with SIADH, Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone, which causes low sodium levels.

CAUTIONS: DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or if you are allergic to any ingredient in this product. DO NOT STOP TAKING THIS MEDICINE and start taking it again on your own. This medicine should only be re-started in a hospital so that blood sodium levels can be closely monitored. Contact your doctor right away if you stop taking this medicine for any reason. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including blood sodium levels and neurologic tests, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking this medicine. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine. Follow your doctor's instructions regarding fluid intake during treatment with this medicine and after you stop taking it. IF VOMITING OR DIARRHEA OCCURS, or if you cannot drink normally, you will need to take care not to become dehydrated. Contact your doctor for instructions. If you feel dizzy or faint, contact your doctor. This may mean that you have become dehydrated. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE HYPERGLYCEMIA (high blood sugar). Symptoms of hyperglycemia include thirst, increased urination, confusion, drowsiness, flushing, rapid breathing, or fruity breath odor. If these symptoms occur, TELL YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU THINK YOU MAY BE PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine. DIABETES PATIENTS: Check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine.
