Prozac medicine can be used to treat major depressive disorder and depressive episodes of bipolar disorder. It is also prescribed to manage obsessions and compulsions in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). It is sometimes used to treat panic disorder, binge eating and bulimia.

Prozac is a prescription only, oral medication in capsule form, with dosages in 10, 20, and 40mg strengths. Depending on the profile of the patient, it may be prescribed for either once or twice daily administration.

Pregnancy: Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or nursing a child. If you become pregnant while taking Prozac, contact your doctor for instructions.

Interactions: Tell your doctor if you are allergic to fluoxetine or any of the ingredients in Prozac pills. Provide your doctor with a complete list of all the prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins, and supplements you are taking. Be sure to include pimozide, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), digoxin, NSAIDs (including aspirin), thioradazine, blood thinners, tramadol, fentanyl, or lithium in this list. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication as it can increase or worsen any Prozac side effects.

Medical Conditions: Provide your doctor with a complete medical history. Be sure to include if you have diabetes, glaucoma, heart disease, liver disease; if you have ever contemplated or attempted suicide; you are being treated for depression or bipolar disorder; or you have, or have had, seizures.
