Plaquenil is largely used to treat or prevent malaria, but can also be a key medication for treating rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus when symptoms have not improved with other treatments. In some cases, it may also be used to treat pediatric dermatomyositis.
Plaquenil is available in 200mg tablets, but the dosage of your prescription can vary widely depending on what is being treated. Maintenance doses for rheumatoid arthritis or lupus erythematosus range from 200mg to 400mg daily, while suppressive therapy for malaria is 400 mg taken once weekly. Initial doses can be as high as 600mg or 800mg in a day in split doses.
Do not use this medication if you have taken hydroxychloroquine or other anti-malarial drugs and had an adverse reaction to your vision or retina. You may not be able to use this medication or may need an adjusted dosage if you have a G-6-PD deficiency, liver disease or disorder, porphyria, or psoriasis, or if you are an alcoholic.
