Ogestrel is an oral contraceptive. It is used primarily to prevent pregnancy, but can also be used to treat acne and regulate your menstrual cycle.

Ogestrel comes in a blister pack with four rows of colored pills. The first three white rows contain the active hormone; the last pink row does not. The white pills are there simply to keep you in the habit of taking the pill every day at the same time.

Before starting Ogestrel, talk to your doctor about the best day to begin taking Ogestrel. For most women, it is best to start taking the pills on the first day their period begins. Ogestrel contains a set of stickers to label the days of the week. Choose the correct sticker and apply it above the top row of pills (for example, if you start taking Ogestrel on a Thursday, choose the sticker that begins on Thursday and ends on Wednesday.)

It is very important that you choose a time to take Ogestrel every day and stick to that time.

After finishing a pack of Ogestrel, immediately begin the next pack without skipping a day. Oral contraceptives only work if they are taken continuously and at the same time each day. If you miss a pill, or if you experience vomiting or diarrhea while taking the pill, be sure to use a backup method of contraception.

If you feel nauseous after taking Ogestrel, take the pill with food or milk.

Always tell your doctor about every medicine, vitamin, a supplement that you are using so they can check for interactions.

Tell your doctor if you have ever had blood clots, coronary artery disease, or any other blood disorder. Also, tell your doctor about any other medical conditions you currently or previously had.

Smoking cigarettes while taking the pill can increase the chance of serious side effects such as heart attack, blood clots, and stroke. This risk is higher for women over 35.

Side effects of Ogestrel may include nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, stomach cramps and bloating changes in appetite, changes in weight, bleeding or spotting between periods, changes in menstruation, breast tenderness, white vaginal discharge, acne, changes in skin color, especially spot on the face or hair growth.

If you experience any of these side effects, call your doctor immediately: heavy menstruation that lasts longer than 7 days, leg pain, weakness or numbness in the limbs, changes in vision, severe vomiting, severe headache, coughing up blood, dark colored urine, rash, depression, or severe chest pain.

This may not be a complete list of warnings. Always talk to your physician before beginning a new medication.
