(Niacin ER (Antihyperlipidemic))

This medicine is an antihyperlipidemic used to improve cholesterol levels and lower very high serum triglyceride levels. It is also used to reduce the risk for a second heart attack or slow or treat hardening of the arteries in certain patients with high cholesterol. This medicine is used in combination with diet. It may be used alone or with other medicines. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

CAUTIONS: DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are allergic to any ingredient in it. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or take this medicine for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. Lab tests, including liver function tests, blood glucose, blood potassium, and serum creatine phosphokinase tests, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking this medicine. This medicine may interfere with certain lab tests. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are taking this medicine. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine. This medicine may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. Alcohol, hot weather, exercise, and fever can increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Also, sit or lie down at the first sign of these effects. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. THIS MEDICINE MAY REDUCE THE NUMBER OF BLOOD CELLS THAT ARE NEEDED FOR CLOTTING. To prevent bleeding, avoid situations where bruising or injury may occur. FOLLOW THE DIET AND EXERCISE PROGRAM given to you by your health care provider. FLUSHING OCCURS WITH THIS MEDICINE AND MAY LAST FOR SEVERAL HOURS. Take this medicine at bedtime so that flushing will occur during sleep, unless your doctor directs otherwise. If you are awakened by flushing at night, get up slowly, especially if you feel dizzy or faint or if you are taking blood pressure medicines. Taking aspirin 30 minutes before you take this medicine may lessen flushing. Talk with your doctor to see if you should take aspirin before you take this medicine or if flushing becomes bothersome. REPORT ANY UNEXPLAINED MUSCLE PAIN, tenderness, or weakness to your doctor right away, especially if you also have a fever or general body discomfort. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine, especially muscle problems. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine. IF YOU HAVE DIABETES, this medicine may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine. This medicine may cause false test results with some urine glucose tests. Check with your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine or changing your diet.
