Levetiracetam is an anticonvulsant medicine and may be used to treat epilepsy. It is primarily used to prevent partial onset seizures but can also be used to prevent tonic-clonic and myoclonic seizures. CAUTIONS: DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. DO NOT SUDDENLY STOP TAKING THIS MEDICINE without first checking with your doctor. You may have an increased risk of seizure if this medicine is suddenly stopped. If you need to stop this medicine, your dose may need to be slowly decreased to avoid side effects. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including kidney function, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using this medicine. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR if your seizures become worse or you have a new kind of seizure. This medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. PATIENTS WHO TAKE THIS MEDICINE MAY BE AT INCREASED RISK FOR SUICIDAL THOUGHTS OR ACTIONS. The risk may be greater in patients who have had suicidal thoughts or actions in the past. Watch patients who take this medicine closely. Contact the doctor at once if new, worsened, or sudden symptoms such as depressed mood; anxious, restless, or irritable behavior; panic attacks; or any unusual change in mood or behavior occur. Contact the doctor right away if any signs of suicidal thoughts or actions occur. SERIOUS RASHES HAVE BEEN REPORTED WITH THE USE OF THIS MEDICINE. Most of the serious rashes that have occurred with the use of this medicine developed within the first 14 to 17 days after starting treatment. However, rashes have also been reported to occur at least 4 months after starting treatment. Contact your doctor at once if you develop rash symptoms, including red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin. Treatment with this medicine should be stopped if rash occurs, unless it is clearly determined that the medicine did not cause the rash. Talk with your doctor for more information. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of this medicine. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN CHILDREN; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially weakness, and mood or behavioral changes. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU BECOME PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.
