This medication is used to treat type 2 diabetes, and it should never be used to treat type 1 diabetes.
Kombiglyze XR is an extended -release medication contained in gelcaps in three different dosages: 5mg/500mg, 2.5mg/1000mg, 5 mg/1000 mg. Your doctor will determine your dose to meet your specific blood-glucose needs. The standard dose is one pill by mouth daily with your evening meal.
Do not use this medication to treat type 1 diabetes or while you're experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis, if you have severe kidney disease, or if you have experienced an allergic reaction to other medications containing metformin. You may also be at risk for a potentially fatal side effect-- lactic acidosis-- so learn the symptoms. You may need to temporarily discontinue this medication if you need to have imaging tests done, such as a CT scan. You may not be able to use this medication if you are older than 80 years and haven't had your kidney function checked, or if you have or have a history of alcoholism, heart disease, high triglycerides, pancreatitis, liver disease, or gallstones.
