Hydroxyzine HCL is usually prescribed alone to treat the itching associated with allergic skin reactions, or with other medications in order to treat anxiety, or with a combination of medications to relieve pain, subdue nausea, or sedate a patient before or after the use of general anesthesia.
This medication is available for intramuscular injection, or in an oral solution, capsules, or tablets, and format is often determined by the condition being treated. (For instance, doctors will administer an injection when it's being used as a sedative.) Dosage is also determined this way, and adults may be prescribed between 25 mg and 50 mg to be taken several times a day, with a maximum dosage of 100mg. On the other hand, children are given 50 mg or less per day in divided doses.
Do not use this medication if you are pregnant, have had a severe allergic reaction to other antihistamines, have kidney or liver disease, or have a seizure disorder. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. This medication may also impair your thinking and ability to react, so be sure to determine how hydroxyzine HCL will affect you before performing potentially dangerous tasks, including driving.
