This medication is used to treat the hyperglycemia associated with type 2 diabetes.
The prescription drug Glumetza is only available in extended release tablets, but it can be administered in either 500mg or 1000mg pills. Dosage will vary based on your personal needs and sugar levels, but the starting dose is 500mg and the maximum dose is 2000mg. The medication is taken by mouth one time daily with the evening meal.
This medication should never be used to treat type 1 diabetes. Do not take this medication while in diabetic ketoacidosis. You also should not use this medication if you have severe kidney disease. You may not be able to take this medication if you are over 80 (depending on kidney function), you've recently taken chlorpropamide, you tend to be dehydrated, you regularly drink alcohol, or if you have or have a history of liver or kidney disease, heart attack, or heart disease (especially congestive heart failure). In some cases, people taking this medication develop a serious and potentially dangerous condition called lactic acidosis.
