Fenofibrate is used along with changes in diet and exercise, as well as certain other medications, in order to treat high cholesterol and high triglycerides (i.e., Hyperlipoproteinemia Type IIa, IIb, IV, and V) in adults. It cannot be used to decrease the risk of heart attack or stroke.
Fenofibrate pills are available as either tablets or capsules, and the dosage of tablets can be 48mg, 54mg, 145mg, and 160mg. Capsules, however, are available in either 50mg or 150mg. Pills are taken by mouth once daily, either with or without food depending on your dose and what's being treated. Always follow your doctor's instructions, especially since they may adjust your dosage for best results.
Never use this medication while breastfeeding. You should not use this medication if you have gallbladder or liver disease or if you have severe kidney disease or are on dialysis. You should also tell your doctor if you have or have a history of diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, pancreatitis, or thyroid disease or dysfunction.
