Eliquis is prescribed to prevent blood clots and strokes in those with atrial fibrillation not caused by a heart-valve disease. It may also be used to treat deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, especially after hip or knee replacement surgery.
Eliquis is administered as a tablet that is taken orally, with water, twice a day; it may be taken with or without food. The exact dosing regimen and the length of time the medication is taken will be determined by the doctor and will depend on the condition being treated, the medical profile of the patient, and the strength of the medication.
Premature discontinuation of Eliquis increases the risk for thrombotic events, including stroke. Do not take this medication if you have an artificial heart valve. Patients undergoing spinal or epidural anesthesia, or who are having a spinal puncture while taking this medication, face an increased risk of paralysis due to blood clot formation around the spine. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience loss of bladder or bowel control, muscle weakness, or tingling in your extremities. Provide your doctor with a complete medical history and a list of all medications you are taking, or have recently taken.
