Boxed warning: Increased risk of heart and blood vessel problems from birth control pills in people who smoke

For details, see the “Interactions and warnings for Blisovi Fe” section.
Common questions about Blisovi Fe
Below you’ll find answers to a few commonly asked questions about Blisovi Fe.
How effective is Blisovi Fe?
Oral birth control, including Blisovi Fe, is very effective in preventing pregnancy. When taken correctly, the chance of becoming pregnant is less than 1%. It may be 3% if a dose is taken late or missed.
To learn more about how effective Blisovi Fe is, talk with your doctor or pharmacist. You can also see the drug’s prescribing information in the “Article Resources” section.
What should I do if I experience no periods while taking Blisovi Fe?
It’s possible to have very light periods or no periods at all while taking Blisovi Fe. But pregnancy could also be a possibility if you miss a period. You could be pregnant if:
- you’ve taken Blisovi Fe on time each day and miss two periods in a row
- you haven’t taken Blisovi Fe on time each day and miss one period
If you miss your period, stop taking Blisovi Fe and use another form of birth control. And call your doctor right away.
If you have questions about what to expect while taking Blisovi Fe, talk with your doctor.
Is Blisovi Fe a combination birth control pill?
Yes, Blisovi Fe is a combination birth control pill. It contains the active drugs norethindrone acetate and ethinyl estradiol. (An active drug is the ingredient that makes the medication work.)
Norethindrone acetate is a synthetic (lab-made) form of the hormone progesterone. Ethinyl estradiol is a synthetic form of the hormone estrogen. Progesterone and estrogen are made naturally in your body, and they help regulate ovulation (release of an egg). The active drugs in Blisovi Fe work to help prevent ovulation. If you do not ovulate, you won’t get pregnant.
To find out more about combination birth control pills, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.
How does Blisovi Fe work? And how long does it take to start working?
Blisovi Fe helps to prevent pregnancy in several ways. It prevents ovulation (release of an egg). (If you do not ovulate, you won’t get pregnant.) Blisovi Fe changes the cervical mucus, which makes it harder for sperm to enter the uterus to fertilize the egg. It also makes the lining of the uterus thinner than usual. This makes it harder for a fertilized egg to implant (attach) in the uterus.
How long it takes Blisovi Fe to start working depends on when you start taking it according to your doctor’s instructions:
- If they recommend you use the Sunday start, you’ll need a backup birth control method for the first 7 days.
- If they recommend you start on day 1 of your period, you don’t need to use a backup birth control method.
If you have questions about what to expect while taking Blisovi Fe, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.
What should I do if I miss a dose of Blisovi Fe?
If you miss a dose of Blisovi Fe, what you should do depends on several factors, including:
- how many pills you missed
- which week you missed your dose or doses
- whether you missed a white pill or a brown pill
- how you started taking Blisovi Fe (Sunday start or day 1 start)
Be sure to talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what to do if you miss a dose of Blisovi Fe. They’ll advise when to take the next dose. And they’ll recommend whether you’ll need a backup birth control method, such as a condom or spermicide.
You can also read more about this in the drug’s prescribing information in the “Article Resources” section.
Is Blisovi Fe similar to Junel Fe 1/20?
Yes, Blisovi Fe 1/20 is similar to Junel Fe 1/20. (Junel Fe 1/20 is another birth control drug.) They both contain the same amount of the active drugs, norethindrone acetate and ethinyl estradiol. (An active drug is the ingredient that makes the medication work.)
Other forms of Blisovi Fe, such as Blisovi Fe 1.5/30 and Blisovi 24 Fe, contain different strengths of these active drugs.
If you’d like to know how these drugs compare, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.
