A peritonsillar abscess is also known as PTA. It is an area of infected tissue in the back of your throat, around the tonsils. The swollen, infected area can burst and cause the infection to travel to other parts of the body like the lungs. Peritonsillar abscesses most often happen after another infection in the throat. It is more common in young adults and can also happen in younger children.
