Cancer happens when cells in the body start to grow out of control. Merkel cells are found in the top layer of your skin near your nerves. Merkel cell skin cancer is an abnormal growth of the Merkel cells in your skin. This kind of skin cancer may quickly spread to lymph nodes that are close by and then to organs, skin, or other lymph nodes that are far away from the first cancer site.
