In some rare diseases, the body makes an abnormal protein called amyloid. Amyloidosis is when this protein builds up in your body. The protein can be made in different places, like inside the bones or in the liver, based on the disease causing the problem. The extra protein may affect your heart, liver, kidneys, spleen, or nerves. It may also affect your skin, stomach, bowels, muscles, joints, or other organs in your body.
