This product is prescribed to treat constipation and maintain regular bowel movements.
Citrucel is available as pills, powder, and sugar-free powder. Powder is only available in a 2g strength. One heaping tablespoon of powder is mixed into at least 8oz of water, and is taken one to three times daily. Pills are only available in a 500mg strength, and two to four pills are taken with at least 8oz of water one to six times daily.
If you have PKU, talk to your doctor about using this medication, as it may contain phenylalanine. You may not be able to take this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you have trouble swallowing, you have IBS, you are currently experiencing stomach pain with nausea or vomiting, you've been constipated for more than a week, or you've had a sudden change in bowel movements that lasts for two weeks or more.
