Cephalexin is a medicine used to treat bacterial infections. It will not work for viral or fungal infections. Cephalexin is commonly prescribed to treat bone infections, urinary tract infections, ear infections, respiratory tract infections, throat infections and skin infections.
Cephalexin is available as a tablet, capsule, or oral suspension. Tablets and capsules should be taken with food or milk and should not be chewed or crushed. Dosages are in 250, 500, and 750-milligram increments for tablets, and 250 and 500 milligrams for capsules. The oral suspension is available in 125 or 250mg/5ml strengths. Prescriptions typically indicate administration every six or twelve hours for seven to ten days.
Pregnancy: Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are nursing an infant. If you become pregnant while taking cephalexin, contact your healthcare provider.
Interactions: Tell your doctor if you are taking any antibiotics, anticoagulants, probenecid, vitamins, or supplements.
Medical Conditions: Tell your doctor if you have, or have had, colitis, kidney disease, liver disease, gastrointestinal disorders, diabetes, or are allergic to cephalexin, or other antibiotics. You should also ask your physician for additional information about this medication for a complete understanding of what is cephalexin.
